Consolidated deliveries and multi-drop run savings

A new chapter in logistics was written when Bookpoint, part of the Hachette UK Group, teamed up with Knights of Old to ensure a smooth and seamless distribution and delivery service.
Bookpoint and Littlehampton Book Services distribute on behalf of publishing divisions of the Hachette UK Group, as well as a number of third party client publishers.
Founded in 1973, Bookpoint is one of the leading book distributors within the UK and has been supplying businesses for more than 35 years delivering an efficient, high quality service to the book industry. Bookpoint employs approximately 250 staff, operating from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, and the business delivers a comprehensive customer service including an export department and a direct service department handling orders straight to the end customer. Operations cover 20 hours a day within a five-day week with deliveries worldwide.
THE REQUIREMENT
The company relies on Knights of Old, the largest privately owned logistics company in the Midlands, to ensure that its business continues to grow. Knights of Old combines deliveries from Bookpoint with Littlehampton Book Services, in Worthing, West Sussex, and the firm has been the primary carrier for UK and Eire pallet distribution since 2011.Paul Gibbon, Bookpoint¹s General Manager, says: "The appointment of Knights of Old has proved to be an excellent choice. THE SOLUTION
"With the two distribution centres based in Oxford and Worthing, Hachette previously employed five service providers. The move to a single provider not only brought about a reduction in unit cost as a result of economies of scale, but also provided us with further savings as a result of multi-drop runs and consolidated deliveries comprising pallets from both distribution centres.” The multi drop runs operate between the two distribution centres and prove useful for Bookpoint in accommodating smaller delivery outlets.Mr Gibbon added: "All deliveries are planned and monitored via a Knights of Old scheduler implanted at our Worthing facility. This direct contact has proven invaluable, both during implementation and on a day-to-day basis, and is now instrumental to the success of our despatch teams.
